The unofficial results tabulated on Tuesday night indicate that 63,479 votes were cast in the 2024 primary election – nearly 27% turnout. Here’s how some of the major races shook out:
President
Joe Biden won the Democratic primary for re-election as president, although 13% of Democratic voters declared “no preference.” Donald Trump secured Republican delegates by defeating Nikki Haley by more than 500,000 votes.
Governor
Democrat Josh Stein is expected to face controversial GOP candidate and current Lt. Gov. Mark K. Robinson in November to succeed Roy Cooper.
Attorney General
Jeff Jackson defeated Durham District Attorney Satana Deberry in the primary by about 22%.
State Senate District 22
Incumbent Mike Woodard lost to fellow Democrat Sophia Chitlik by 16%.
Durham Board of County Commissioners
Incumbents Wendy Jacobs and Nida Allam held onto their seats, while the other three top vote-getters included Michelle Burton, Mike Lee, and Stephen Valentine. Incumbents Brenda Howerton and Nimasheena Burns didn’t make the top five.
Durham Public Schools Board of Education
Wendell Tabb won his unopposed election for the Consolidated District A seat. Joy Harrell defeated Atrayus Goode for the at-large BOE seat by 77%.
Unchallenged incumbents Jessica Carde-Auten and Millicent Rogers both won re-election in the wake of recent unrest over the classified worker pay crisis, but saw between 2 and 4% of Durham voters writing in alternative candidates.
