A Taste of Greece returns to St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church this weekend with Greek food, pastries, shopping, and church tours. Visitors also should plan for a change that could affect their arrival: there's less parking available this year.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, and Sunday, Oct. 11, at 8306 N.C. 751, about half a mile south of Interstate 40's Exit 274. Admission is free, and the event is scheduled rain or shine.

The usual overflow parking lot across N.C. 751 is no longer available. Parking at the church is limited, so consider carpooling with family, friends, or neighbors, or using a ridesharing service such as Uber or Lyft. Sharing a ride will help leave more spaces for other visitors.

The church also is asking its volunteers to carpool to preserve parking for guests.

Rain looks likely Sunday. The National Weather Service's Wednesday forecast for Durham County calls for showers Sunday, with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Check the latest forecast before heading out, and bring rain gear if you're planning a Sunday visit. Tented dining and takeout will be available both days.

Food offerings include gyro pita wraps, grilled chicken pita wraps, spanakopita, moussaka, Greek salads, and stuffed grape leaves. Spanakopita pairs spinach and feta inside layers of phyllo dough, while moussaka combines eggplant, potatoes, ground beef, and cheese beneath a bechamel topping.

For dessert, choices include baklava, custard-filled galaktoboureko, and loukoumades, fried dough puffs served with toppings. Visitors can eat at the event or take food and pastries home.

The marketplace offers another way to stock the kitchen, with Greek olives, feta, olive oil, and specialty groceries. Shoppers can also browse jewelry, crafts, souvenirs, and watercolors of Greece by Raleigh artist Pantelis Zografos. The church's community cookbook, The Grecian Plate, will be available, too.

An Attic Treasures Sale will feature art, ceramics, textiles, and other finds.

For neighbors who've driven past St. Barbara's domed church and wondered about its interior, tours are scheduled at 12:30, 2:30, and 4:30 p.m. both days. The tours highlight the Byzantine-style building and its iconography, last about 30 minutes, and include time for questions.
