Are You Durham's Next Poet Laureate?
The City of Durham is now seeking candidates to serve as its second Poet Laureate.
The first-ever Poet Laureate, D.J. Rogers, is wrapping up a two-year term during which he has hosted eight public readings and 13 free educational opportunities for adults and more than 170 students.
The term for the next Poet Laureate runs from Aug. 30, 2024, to June 30, 2027. Those who want to be considered for the post must go through the city’s Request for Interest (RFI) process, even if they’re nominated by someone else. The nomination deadline is May 6. The RFI deadline is just before midnight on May 28.
From the applicants, a panel that includes writers, artists, and city staff will recommend a Poet Laureate candidate to the Durham Cultural Advisory Board (DCAB). The DCAB’s recommended candidate then goes to Mayor Leonardo Williams for appointment to the post. The Poet Laureate gets a total of $15,000 for services provided on behalf of the city.
