Biogen Donates $250,000 to Durham Tech’s New Life Sciences Center to Support Future Biomanufacturing Talent
Biogen marks 30 years in RTP with a $250K gift to Durham Tech’s new life sciences center, helping train the next generation of biotech and biomanufacturing professionals.
In a major boost to the Triangle’s life sciences ecosystem, Biogen and the Biogen Foundation have pledged $250,000 to support Durham Technical Community College’s new Novo Nordisk Life Sciences Center. The announcement comes as Biogen celebrates its 30th anniversary in the Research Triangle Park area.
The donation will help fund the Biogen Lab Hall, part of Durham Tech’s state-of-the-art, 35,000-square-foot training facility focused on preparing students for high-demand roles in biomanufacturing and the broader life sciences industry. Scheduled to serve hundreds of students annually, the new facility will feature 12 advanced laboratories and industry-aligned programs that mirror the evolving needs of the region’s booming biotech sector.
Supporting Workforce Growth in South Durham and Beyond
This latest investment reflects Biogen’s ongoing commitment to workforce development and community partnership in the Triangle region.
“We can think of no better way to commemorate our three decades of investment and partnership in the Research Triangle Park community than with this important investment to Durham Tech,” said Nicole Murphy, head of pharmaceutical operations and technology at Biogen. “The institution has helped provide vital training and skills to future biotechnology leaders for more than 60 years, and we are proud to support such a vital program for our business and so many others.”
The announcement highlights the increasing demand for skilled biotech workers in North Carolina, home to one of the largest life sciences hubs in the country. Durham Tech’s expanded programming will help fill critical workforce gaps and provide a pipeline of talent for employers in RTP and South Durham.

A Win for Students, Industry, and the Community
Durham Tech President J.B. Buxton emphasized the broader impact of the project, noting that the success of the life sciences center hinges on strong partnerships with employers like Biogen.
“Durham Tech is committed to preparing individuals for careers that provide economic opportunity and mobility in a rapidly growing field,” said Buxton. “Biogen’s pledge is a win not just for the college and our students, but for life sciences companies, the Triangle economy, and the health of our community.”
Building a Talent Pipeline in the Life Sciences
The Novo Nordisk Life Sciences Center is expected to be a cornerstone of Durham Tech’s strategy to expand access to high-quality STEM education, particularly for underrepresented communities in the region. By partnering with global life sciences leaders like Biogen, the college aims to offer training programs that directly connect students with job opportunities in areas such as biopharmaceutical manufacturing, laboratory technology, and regulatory affairs.
