Burton IB Elementary Named Top Magnet School of Excellence
Burton IB Elementary’s honor makes it eligible for additional recognition, including the Dr. Ronald P. Simpson Distinguished Merit Award, the nation’s highest honor for magnet schools.
Burton IB Elementary School has been recognized as one of only 24 schools nationwide to earn the prestigious Top Magnet School of Excellence distinction. Additionally, five other Durham Public Schools magnet programs have received Schools of Excellence and Schools of Distinction honors.
The awards, presented by Magnet Schools of America, highlight schools that meet rigorous standards in academic achievement, innovative curricula, and promotion of racial and socioeconomic diversity. Burton IB Elementary joins an elite group of magnet schools celebrated for their commitment to integrated instruction, student success, and strong family and community partnerships.
Other DPS schools recognized include:
- Schools of Excellence: Durham School of the Arts, Durham School of Technology, and George Watts Montessori Elementary School.
- Schools of Distinction: City of Medicine Academy and Lakewood Montessori Middle School.
Burton IB Elementary’s honor makes it eligible for additional recognition, including the Dr. Ronald P. Simpson Distinguished Merit Award, the nation’s highest honor for magnet schools. If selected, Burton will receive $5,000 in monetary support.
“As the principal of Burton Elementary School, it is a tremendous honor to be named a Top Magnet School of Excellence, a distinction earned by only 24 schools nationwide,” said Principal Tiffany Boss. “This recognition is a testament to the unwavering commitment of our students, staff, and families to foster academic excellence, innovation, and a thriving community of learners.”
Superintendent Dr. Anthony Lewis praised the achievements of DPS magnet schools, saying: “We are extremely proud of the work being done in our magnet schools to develop well-rounded, diverse scholars.”
Magnet Schools of America evaluates schools based on their ability to raise academic achievement, promote diversity, implement integrated curricula, and build strong partnerships. To qualify for recognition, schools submit a detailed application reviewed by a panel of educators.
Families interested in enrolling in DPS magnet programs can participate in the district’s annual magnet lottery, open through Jan. 31.
