Rochambeau flopped over on his side, daring me to scratch his belly while he sprawled on the brick sidewalk leading to the farming village replica outside the American Revolution Museum in Yorktown, Va.

The cat, named after Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau, welcomed me and my family to the outdoor portion of the museum as we visited on my 60th birthday - during the 250th year of our nation.

Spending my birthday here, as a lifelong history nerd and journalist felt about right.
