Could Eureka Math Get an Upgrade?

Durham Public Schools may upgrade their Eureka Math curriculum for kindergarten through fifth grade in the coming academic year. The Board of Education is set to discuss the new Eureka Math Squared option during a work session on Jan. 11.

The current contract with the existing Eureka Math curriculum ends after the 2023-2024 academic year. According to DPS staff, the upgraded Eureka Math Squared already is in use in pre-kindergarten classes.

It would cost about $3.5 million over the next five years to upgrade the district to the new curriculum. Benefits cited for the upgraded content include:

  • 40-50 fewer daily lessons, allowing more flexible pacing.
  • More colorful and visually engaging print materials.
  • Teacher support resources with improved usability features.
  • Interactive digital lessons.
  • Digital assessments with score reporting.
  • Digital resources in English and Spanish.

A survey of 22 Durham schools showed that 88% of teachers, coaches, and administrators are satisfied overall with the Eureka Math curriculum.
