SoDu Sweet Talk: Valentine’s Messages From the Neighborhood
Southpoint Access is an independent, locally owned news outlet focused on schools, neighborhoods, and community life in South Durham. Projects like SoDu Sweet Talk help support that work - while giving neighbors an easy way to celebrate love, gratitude, and community connection.

Back in 1982, Jordan High School's cafeteria played host to the cabaret show that would evolve into An Evening to Shine.

This month, the scholarship fundraiser celebrates its 45th performance, now at the Durham Performing Arts Center. More than 350 Durham Public Schools students are performing or showcasing their artwork. Proceeds go to the Durham Promise Scholarship Fund.

It's a partnership between DPS and the DPS Foundation. The show's scheduled for 7 p.m. on Feb. 24.

"Our annual Evening to Shine showcase is a brilliant celebration of what happens in our classrooms every day," said Les Turner, who leads K-12 arts education for the school district. "From the vibrant gallery of visual art to the energy on stage, these aren't just electives; they are vital arenas where students master the art of expression, critical thinking, and teamwork."

Tickets purchased from the DPAC box office start at $18. It's also possible to pay a ticket forward, making it possible for those less fortunate to attend.

Brianna Kennedy, interim executive director at the DPS Foundation, said the partnership with DPS "makes this possible, and it reflects what we see every day across DPS classrooms: when students are supported and given opportunities to shine, public schools are places of limitless potential."

An Evening to Shine's emcee will be Kweilyn Murphy of ABC 11.
