Danielle Jones, an assistant superintendent with Durham Public Schools and a U.S. Air Force veteran, has been hired as the new superintendent of Orange County Schools. Jones starts the new job on Feb. 1, 2024.
At DPS, she has managed the district’s middle schools, supervising 12 principals and implementing the strategic plan. Before becoming assistant superintendent, Jones was a coach and principal supervisor, contributing to the district’s gains in sixth- and eighth-grade math. She also previously worked for Franklin and Wake County schools.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as superintendent of Orange County Schools and look forward to becoming an active member of her community,” Jones said in a news release. “I am excited to partner with the board and community to ensure the success and well-being of all students and staff.”
She is a three-time graduate of North Carolina State University, with a doctorate of education, a master’s in school administration, and a bachelor’s in business management.
Jones was hired after a review process that included 26 candidates from nine states and territories.
The Orange County Board of Education “enthusiastically chose Dr. Jones based on her extensive track record of success, her exemplary leadership, and her unwavering dedication to students and staff,” according to a news release. “The Board is confident that Dr. Jones’s vision and expertise will propel the district to new heights of achievement.”
A reception is planned in Jones’s honor at the Board of Education’s Jan. 8 meeting and members of the public are welcome to attend.
