DPS Transportation: Back to Normal Monday?

It’s not entirely clear whether Durham Public Schools officials expect any school bus driver or mechanic call-outs tomorrow. But a message from the district on Sunday evening advised parents to check their Edulog parent portal for real-time bus information.

Dozens of drivers called out last week after classified staff – including mechanics – learned their pay levels were being readjusted, treated as overpayments, and possibly clawed back by the district. Bus drivers who did come to work reported that they felt uneasy driving buses without having mechanics on standby to assist with any mishaps. As a result, the district called on parents to manage morning and afternoon transportation for students.

No such request was included in Sunday’s message.

The DPS Board of Education is set to meet Monday at 8 a.m. in closed session to discuss the pay situation with the district’s attorney. A statement from the district is expected after the meeting.

Teachers and staff also plan to demonstrate at Thursday’s Board of Education meeting.
