Durham City Offices Closing on MLK Day

Most City of Durham offices — including City Hall and all non-emergency facilities and operations — will close on Monday, Jan. 19, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Solid Waste Collections

Environmental and Street Services offices will be closed. Monday curbside collections for garbage, recycling and yard waste will shift by one business day to Tuesday, Jan. 20. All other collection days remain unchanged for the week.

The Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, Yard Waste Facility and Household Hazardous Waste Center will also close Monday, Jan. 19.

Residents can sign up for collection-day alerts and holiday reminders on the Environmental & Street Services web page or by downloading the free Durham Rollout app in the Apple and Google Play stores.

City Council

The City Council’s regular business meeting — normally held the third Monday of the month — is postponed to Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall.

The meeting will stream live on the City’s website, YouTube, and Facebook pages, and on Roku, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV via the free Boxcast app. It also will air live on Durham Television Network (Spectrum channel 8 or digital channel 1302, Frontier channel 70 and AT&T U-verse channel 99). Parks and Rec

Durham Parks and Recreation’s administrative office and all facilities — except special-use and athletic facility rentals — will be closed Monday, Jan. 19.

DPR will host “MLK Event: Celebrating the Legacy through the Arts” on Saturday, Jan. 10, from 2 to 5 p.m. at W.D. Hill Recreation Center, 1308 Fayetteville St. The free public event commemorates the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. For information about DPR programs, activities and events, call 919-560-4355 during office hours or visit the department’s web page.

Downtown Parking

The Park Durham Customer Service Center will close Monday, Jan. 19. On city-designated holidays, downtown parking is free in on-street spaces, in some city-owned garages and in city-owned surface lots.

GoDurham Transit

GoDurham and GoDurham ACCESS will operate on a Sunday-level schedule (6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.) Monday, Jan. 19. For the most up-to-date information, including detours and holiday reminders, call 919-485-RIDE (7433), download Transit App or follow the agency on X.

Durham One Call

Durham One Call will close Monday, Jan. 19. Residents may submit service requests online, through the free Durham One Call app (Apple and Google Play), by texting 919-813-6315, or by leaving a voicemail at 919-560-1200. Requests will be forwarded to the appropriate department on the next business day.

Water and Sewer

For after-hours water main breaks and sewer overflows — including weekends and City-recognized holidays — call the Water Management Department’s emergency line at 919-560-4344. On-call crews will be dispatched.
