Durham Expects Heat Wave This Weekend and Beyond

The National Weather Service expects “dangerously hot weather” Saturday through Thursday.

Temperatures could climb to the middle to upper 90s each day, with heat index values pushing 105 degrees.

“These unusually hot conditions for this time of year will increase the risk of heat-related illness, especially for those without access to air conditioning,” the NWS advisory stated.

With that in mind, Durham County Library branches – including South Regional and Southwest Regional in our area – are open Friday and Saturday, 9:30 to 6 p.m. as cooling centers.

Some tips for beating the heat:

  • Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid sugary or caffeinated beverages that can lead to dehydration. Drinks with electrolytes are a plus.
  • Stay indoors with air conditioning.
  • Take cool baths or showers to reduce body temperature.
  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing made of natural fabrics, such as cotton.
  • Wear hats, sunglasses, and use sunscreen SPF 30 or higher.
  • Avoid outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Make sure outdoor play areas are well shaded.
  • Take frequent rest breaks.
  • Opt for smaller, lighter meals.
  • Don’t leave kids or pets in parked cars.
  • Check on elderly or ill neighbors to make sure they have access to cool environments.

Be alert for symptoms of heat illness, such as heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and muscle cramps. Get medical attention if you experience symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
