Durham Habitat, Church Partner for Affordable Housing

Habitat for Humanity of Durham and Mount Vernon Baptist Church will begin construction on a new neighborhood of 10 affordable homes in Durham’s Southside. The homes will be built on a 2.5-acre plot recently purchased from the church in the historically significant Hayti district.

The kickoff event is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 24, at 10 a.m. at 211 E. Umstead St. It will feature a wall-raising ceremony and a reception at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. The partnership aims to provide affordable homeownership opportunities in an area that has become increasingly unaffordable.

Pastor Rev. Jerome J. Washington emphasized the congregation’s decision to sell the land to Habitat for Humanity rather than a private developer, underscoring their desire to make a meaningful impact on the community. Both organizations hope the project will inspire other innovative land-use partnerships in Durham.
