Durham Heat Index in Danger Zone Again Today

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from noon until 8 p.m. today, warning that temperatures in central North Carolina – including Durham – could see heat index values as high as 109 degrees Fahrenheit.

The hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses. Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning, avoid the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors.

The hazardous weather is expected to continue on Wednesday, with heat index values between 105 and 108 degrees.

“Heat of this magnitude and duration will pose a moderate risk for those sensitive to heat, such as older adults, infants, athletes, outdoor workers, and those without effective cooling,” the NWS reported.

Strong to severe storms are possible Wednesday afternoon and early evening, mainly along and north of U.S. Hwy. 64. Storms Thursday and into the weekend could cause flooding.
