[SoDu Alert] Durham Libraries Provide Warming Centers

Durham County Library branches are open as warming centers today and tomorrow from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., providing shelter from the chilly weather at the following locations:

  • Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St.
  • East Regional Library, 211 Lick Creek Ln.
  • North Regional Library, 221 Milton Rd.
  • South Regional Library, 4505 S. Alston Ave.
  • Southwest Regional Library, 3605 Shannon Rd.

The National Weather Service has issued a cold-weather advisory from 3 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, with possible wind-chill temperatures as low as 2 degrees above zero. Frostbite and hypothermia can occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures.

The Durham Housing Authority offers the following winter weather tips:

Staying Warm Indoors

  • Dress in layers, even inside, to retain body heat.
  • Use space heaters safely on flat, non-flammable surfaces, kept at least three feet from flammable items. Turn off when unattended.
  • Seal drafts with weather stripping or draft stoppers to keep warm air inside.

Preparing for Winter Weather

  • Stock up on blankets, warm clothing, and non-perishable food.
  • Charge all electronic devices to prepare for possible power outages.
  • Choose flashlights or battery-powered lanterns for lighting during outages. Candles pose a fire hazard.
  • Drip faucets in kitchen and bathroom to avoid undue pressure on pipes.

Walking and Driving Safely

  • Watch out for icy sidewalks and driveways. Use salt or sand to prevent slips.
  • Avoid driving in icy or snowy conditions, if possible. If driving is necessary, slow down and allow extra time for stopping. Keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle with blanket, flashlight, and extra water.
