Durham Police Encourage Large Box Disposal

With the holidays upon us, the Durham Police Department is urging residents to take precautions to protect their homes and belongings from burglars.

The department’s annual “Operation: No Perched Packages” campaign, which runs Dec. 20, 2024, through Jan. 6, 2025, highlights a key safety tip: avoid advertising new purchases by leaving electronics packaging and other boxes visible at the curb.

Burglars often look for signs of recent big-ticket purchases, such as electronics, making discarded boxes an easy target. To help reduce this risk, residents are encouraged to break down large cardboard boxes and take them to designated recycling centers rather than setting them out for curbside pickup.

The city, in partnership with Solid Waste Management and Durham Parks and Recreation, has designated three recycling drop-off locations:

• Morreene Road Park, 1102 Morreene Road

• I.R. Holmes Sr. at Campus Hills Recreation Center, 2000 S. Alston Ave.

• Walltown Recreation Center, 1308 W. Club Blvd.

While year-round vigilance is important, the holiday season presents an increased risk due to the high volume of gift-giving. By properly disposing of packaging, residents can reduce the likelihood of attracting thieves.
