Durham Public Schools Moves Ahead with New DSA Project

In the end, the Durham Public Schools Board of Education made final its decision to eventually depart the downtown Durham School of the Arts campus in favor of a new school a couple miles away at the old Duke Homestead in the form of a unanimous consent agenda vote on Aug. 22.

The project, last discussed at a board work session where members telegraphed their support for building the new campus as planned, was lumped without further board discussion into the consent portion that included a budget amendment, some policy updates, and renewal of the district’s insurance program.

Some residents continued to speak in favor of renovating the old school during public comment, urging board members to reconsider, to no avail.

The consent agenda also included a change order for the new DSA project for equipment pre-purchase and temporary power of about $1.45 million. Construction is expected to start on Sept. 1, according to the change order.
