Durham Schools Close as Impacts from Helene Threaten

Durham Public Schools are closed to students and staff on Friday as North Carolina feels effects from the massive Hurricane Helene.
The school district on Thursday issued a statement declaring the closures “out of an abundance of caution.” It won’t be a remote learning day. Athletic events set for Friday must be rescheduled. Weekend facility rentals are canceled.
The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory from midnight Thursday to 6 p.m. on Friday, with concerns about winds gusting to as much as 45 mph in the Triangle. Tree limbs could fall and result in scattered power outages.
The NWS also issued flood watch advisories through Friday afternoon. Excessive runoff due to the storm could flood rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone areas.
