Durham Should Expect Impacts from Debby

Late this week – especially Thursday and Friday – Southpoint Access readers in and around Durham should be prepared for heavy rainfall from Tropical Storm Debby after the storm crosses Florida, back into the Atlantic, and then through the Carolinas should it follow the projected path.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm is expected to produce rain between 6 and 12 inches, with as much as 18 inches, in portions of northern Florida and North Carolina through Friday morning. That could mean another bout of flash flooding like we saw within the past few weeks. And, given that year-round schools already have early release planned Friday, we might see school canceled entirely for the day.

However, the good news (for South Durham) seems to be that our area currently sits in the NHC’s “slight” range for flash flooding: at least a 15% chance. Chances jump to at least 40% or “moderate” on the southeastern coast around Wilmington.
