Durham Tech’s Phlebotomy Program recently received its first accreditation from the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians. The accreditation signifies that the program meets high standards in education quality. The accreditation process reviewed several aspects including lesson plans, instructors’ certifications, and competencies in blood drawing procedures.
The team that navigated the accreditation included Dr. Jean D. Brown, Dr. Tammy Kincy, Griselle Guzman, Clara Hawley, and Gbemisola “Sola” Matthew. Health and Wellness Dean Melissa O. Ockert supported the accreditation efforts.
Accredited programs enhance students’ familiarity with current healthcare trends and best practices, making them more marketable to employers and helping them earn a livable wage. Pay for certified phlebotomists ranges from $42,000 to $48,000 annually. Certification can also increase earning potential for other healthcare workers like nurse’s aides. Graduates can pursue careers with companies like LabCorp and hospitals or get further training for patient care roles.
Matthew, a former student, emphasized the program’s challenging nature and the support received from faculty in gaining necessary confidence. She encourages those interested in phlebotomy to consider the program.
