Daily water demand in Durham continues to decline while the Bull City remains under Stage 2 usage restrictions. But recent rain appears to have had little effect on Lake Michie and Little River Reservoir.

What do the Stage 2 restrictions mean for you?

  • No spray irrigation using city water.
  • No vehicle washing except at commercial or institutional car washes.
  • No surface washing of exterior building services, decks, or paved areas using city water, except where a health or safety issue arises.
  • Users of more than 100,000 gallons a day are encouraged to reduce their consumption by 30% and document such efforts.

To report violations, use this form. So far, city officials have received 170 complaints, but only verbal warnings have been issued so far.

"Unfortunately, that will likely change this week," states a news release issued on Monday. "If you see someone watering their lawn and not following the Stage 2 restrictions, talk to them about the value of water if you're comfortable."

Enforcement tiers range from warnings to fines and service disconnection. Get more answers from the city's Water Shortage Response FAQ.
