The City of Durham in 2024 repeated its Sustained Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense program.
Last year, the city participated in 36 outreach events and presentations – from festivals to concerts – to reach more than 4,300 residents and businesses with messaging about water conservation.
“We’re honored to receive the WaterSense Sustained Excellence Award again. This recognition is a testament to our team’s unwavering dedication to water efficiency and the strong partnerships we’ve built with our community,” said Department Director Don Greeley. “Together, we’re making a meaningful impact on preserving this vital resource for future generations.”
In 2023, the city participated in WaterSense campaigns such as Fix-a-Leak Week, Your Better Yard, Flip Your Flapper, Your Better Bathroom/Shower Better, Sprinkler Spruce-Up, We’re for Water, and When in Drought. Outreach efforts included Environmental Field Days with Durham County Soil and Water, Environmental Education Days with the Durham Bulls, back-to-school events with Durham Public Schools, and the Durham Earth Day Festival.
Durham Water Management also partnered with WaterSense partner Waste Reduction Partners to offer water audits to larger non-residential customers, providing specialized services for those with unique water consumption needs.
