[Election 2024] Durham Stays Blue on a Day Won Nationally by Red

It wasn’t all bad, Durham.

Josh Stein defeated Mark Robinson to become North Carolina’s next governor, with Rachel Hunt as his lieutenant governor.

Elaine Marshall held on as secretary of state.

Jeff Jackson succeeds Stein as attorney general, thwarting Dan Bishop.

Maurice “Mo” Green won against Michele Morrow to lead the state’s Department of Public Instruction. In a news release issued Wednesday morning, Green said: “The work does not end here. It’s now upon us to put forth and implement our bold vision, direction, and plan for (North Carolina) public schools. Our children and the future of our state depend on it.”

Valerie Foushee fended off two challengers to retain her U.S. House of Representatives seat.

And Durham residents approved city bonds for parks and recreation and streets and sidewalks.

In the State Senate, Natalie Murdock returns for District 20, while Sophia Chitlik is set to get her start in District 22 – and it looks like Republicans came up short in their bid to hold onto a supermajority that has made them veto-proof.

Superior Court Judge Shamieka LaCher Rhinehart and District Court Judge Kendra Montgomery-Blinn ran unopposed and thus remain on the bench.

Locally, 72% of voters – 179,543 – cast ballots, with nearly 80% of those votes going to Vice President Kamala Harris. In North Carolina, unofficial results indicate that she lost the Tarheel State by fewer than 200,000 votes.
