Have Some Fun, Save the Planet
Battle plastic pollution, dress as your favorite plant or animal for a parade, and bring documents for shredding, if you like!
Durham Parks and Recreation on April 21 hosts a rain-or-shine Earth Day Festival from 12 to 5 p.m. at Durham Central Park. The event is free and open to the public.
Highlight areas include:
- Earth Day Market: A showcase of environmentally friendly businesses and organizations.
- Sustainable Transportation Expo: The City Department of Transportation and Bike Durham showcase GoDurham’s new electric bus, provide a bicycle training workshop for kids, and let visitors test ride an electric bike.
- Valet Bicycle Parking: At the corner of Foster and Hunt streets, you can check your bicycle with members of Durham’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission and Bike Durham. They’ll hand you a claim ticket and then park the bike in a secure location for free. Bike mechanics will be on-site to check rides for safety.
- Free Document Shredding: Office paper, manila folders, staples, paper clips, rubber bands, and receipts are welcome for shredding between 12 and 3 p.m. at 412 Morris St.
- Zero-Waste Project: Got trash? Waste stations at the festival will have areas to sort, recycle, reuse, compost, and trade materials.
- H20 2 Go: A hydration station on-site will offer fresh drinking water, so bring a refillable water bottle.
- Family Fun Zone: Activities for kids include hands-on fun from the Music Explorium, Museum of Life and Science, School House of Wonder, Durham County Bookmobile, and the North Carolina Girl Scouts of America.
- Book Giveaway and Registration: The Durham County Library will welcome visitors aboard the Bookmobile, where they can get a free book and apply for a library card.
- Earth Day Parade: Make your own percussion instrument and dress as a plant or animal for this parade, which lines up at 2:15 for a 2:30 kickoff. Parade features the Bulltown Strutters.
