[In Memoriam] Dorothy Elizabeth Brinkley Loftis, 99

Dorothy Elizabeth Brinkley Loftis died May 22 at Eno Pointe Assisted Living in Durham. She was 99. She was born Feb. 7, 1925, to the late Hubert and Lottie Coley Brinkley.

A lifelong resident of Durham, she served as choir director at Glendale Heights United Methodist Church for many years. Loftis also volunteered in the Durham Public Schools, for Meals on Wheels, and as part of the Durham Civitan Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton Shuler Loftis; her daughter, Lesley Loftis Weaver; and her brother, Sim Coley Brinkley.

She is survived by a son, Christopher Brinkley Loftis; granddaughter Elizabeth Weaver Dehmer (Jeff); grandson William Loftis Weaver (Michelle); great-grandchildren Joseph Cooper Dehmer, Anna Grace Dehmer, and Cole Marval Weaver; and sisters Hazel Staples and Jewel Tharrington.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 1 at Pleasant Green United Methodist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Planned Parenthood South Atlantic.
