[In Memoriam] Dr. James R. Dykes, 73

The following obituary originally was published by Hall-Wynne Funeral Home:

Dr. James R. Dykes died unexpectedly yet peacefully in his home May 1, 2024. He was 73.

He was born on Oct. 23, 1950, in Borger, Texas, to the late James and Virginia Dykes.

Dykes earned diplomas from Duke University undergraduate and medical schools. After practicing family medicine in Roanoke Rapids and on Ocracoke Island, he opened his private practice in Durham, where he was a solo family physician for 21 years.

After retiring, Dykes built his dream home in the Potluck Farm Community north of Durham, where he resided for the remainder of his life. Every day he enjoyed caring for his farm animals, walking on the wooded trails, practicing Tai Chi, and reading.

Dykes is survived by his wife, Cathy, their daughter, Lia, and his brothers Bob, Tom, and Bill.

In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks that anyone wishing to honor Dykes’s memory walk in the woods or on the beach and wish him peace.

A Celebration of Life will be held June 30 at 3 p.m. at the Carriage House, 3110 Jones Ferry Rd., Chapel Hill, NC 27516.
