[In Memoriam] George "Buck" King, 88
One of Durham’s first Black firefighters, George “Buck” King, passed away on April 7. He was 88.
King joined the Durham Fire Department on Oct. 1, 1958. He retired on Sept. 1, 1993 after achieving the ranks of assistant chief and fire marshal.
He was one of two surviving members of the “Original Ten” – the first Black firefighters hired to work out of Old Station 4 on Fayetteville Street. Capt. John Lyon is now the last of that group.
Visitation was held April 12 at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home in Durham. The funeral was April 13 at United Holy Church Southern District Headquarters in Goldsboro.
