[In Memoriam] Mary Alice Eubanks, 101

Mary Alice D. Eubanks passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Monday, May 13. She was 101. She was born in Durham at Watts Hospital on December 28, 1922, to John Milton Duhling and Mary Ward Duhling.
Eubanks attended Durham High School, graduating in 1940. She was well-loved by her classmates and was an overachiever from an early age. In her senior year, she was homeroom president, a member of the student council, and involved in numerous clubs, including the commercial club, O. Henry Literary Society, junior needlework guild, yearbook staff, swimming club, life-saving club, monogram club, girls’ athletic association, and school secretary. She attended her 55th high school reunion in 1995.
She was a devoted member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Durham, where she served as treasurer for more than 30 years. After the birth of her three children, she worked at Duke University, where she managed the insurance billing department from 1958 to 1984. After retirement, she devoted her life to helping raise her granddaughters.
A beloved pillar of her church and community, Eubanks was a gentle soul with much love to give. She was adored by her friends, family, and especially her granddaughters.
She is survived by her sons, William Ruie Eubanks (Elizabeth Jones Eubanks) of Fletcher, N.C., Joseph Milton Eubanks (Elizabeth Bittle Eubanks) of Durham, N.C., and her son-in-law, Rodney Michael Long of Cary, N.C. Her six granddaughters, Amanda Wallace, Katherine Demetris, Corie Latta, Camilla Irish, Macey Englebright, and Elizabeth Bullard, and nine great-grandchildren. Mary Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her brother John Milton Duhling, and her daughter Mary Anne Long.
A graveside service will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery on Friday, May 17, 2024, at 10 a.m., 1721 Legion Road, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27517.
