Main, Southwest Durham Libraries Designated Cooling Centers
The Durham County Library main branch and Southwest Regional Branch are the assigned cooling centers for residents to escape the extreme heat today and tomorrow – June 25 and 26, according to the Durham City/County Emergency Management Department.
The libraries – at 300 N. Roxboro St. and 3605 Shannon Road) – are open 9:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. each day.
On Tuesday, the National Weather Service issued an updated hazardous weather outlook that includes Durham County, indicating that dangerously hot weather is expected to continue through the upcoming weekend.
“The most dangerous heat and humidity will occur Wednesday and again this weekend, when shade air temperatures will rise into the lower to middle 90s and heat index values will peak in the upper 90s to 104 ,” the advisory stated. “These unusually hot conditions for this time of year will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those without access to air conditioning.”
