Measles Exposure Confirmed in South Durham

Someone visiting Durham on Feb. 6 may have exposed others to measles while contagious, according to the Durham County Department of Public Health.

In a statement issued Wednesday, officials said the exposures would've occurred at the following locations and times:

  • Goodwill, 4318 Garrett Rd., between 10:20 a.m. and 1:10 p.m.
  • Chubby's Tacos, 4711 Hope Valley Rd., between 11:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
  • Plato's Closet, 8128 Renaissance Pkwy. No. 110, between 12:45 and 4 p.m.

"Measles can infect other people through the air for up to two hours after the infected person has left the area, as reflected by the time frames above," the department stated.

If you were in those locations during the delineated time windows, you should:

  • Check your immunization status. Get vaccinated if you haven't been yet. Don't know your status? Vaccinated between 1957 and 1968? Check with your doctor for a measles titer, which can confirm immunity to measles.
  • Monitor your health for the next 21 days for any symptoms.
  • Feeling symptoms? Call your doctor before visiting in person due to the extreme contagious nature of the illness.

"About 9 out of 10 people who are exposed to measles will get sick with measles if they are not protected by vaccination or previous infection," the statement reads.

Symptoms may include:

  • High fever, possibly spiking more than 104 degrees.
  • Cough.
  • Runny nose.
  • Red, watery eyes.
  • Tiny white spots inside the mouth.
  • Rash.
  • Small raised bumps.
  • Spots may join together while spreading from head to the rest of the body.

Who's at highest risk?

  • Children younger than 5.
  • Adults over 20.
  • Pregnant women.
  • People with weakened immune systems.

Severe outcomes of the disease include pneumonia, encephalitis (brain swelling), pregnancy complications, and death.
