Neighborhood Meeting Ahead for Potential Lakewood Shopping Center Redevelopment

More than eight acres on the site of Lakewood Shopping Center along Chapel Hill Road could be rezoned from commercial center to commercial general and redeveloped to include self-storage units.

A neighborhood meeting about this project is scheduled for April 16, between 6 and 7 p.m., on Zoom.

The total appraised tax value of the Lakewood Shopping Center property is nearly $4 million, according to the city’s planning database. Records indicate the center belongs to Triple B 26, LLC, with a registered address in Greenville, N.C. Hyman J. Brody is listed as the managing member of the owing entity. Members of the Brody family have been prominent benefactors of East Carolina University, giving more than $22 million to that university’s medical school.

Hyman J. Brody also serves as president and CEO of BrodyCo, which started as a retail developer but has since expanded to mixed uses in residential, office, medical, and industrial. Their website notes that BrodyCo acquired Lakewood Shopping Center out of foreclosure in 2019

Nil Ghosh of Morningstar Law Group represents the developer of the Lakewood project.
