Last weekend, Catherine and I checked out the Girlhood show at Mettlesome.

The premise: The performers based their improvisational scenes on old photos and scrapbook items.

For this show, one of the inspirations was an announcement about a performer's birthday, published long ago in a print newspaper in small-town Florida. It got some laughs, the idea of this sort of celebration being a big enough deal to qualify as news.

But here's my thought: that's exactly the sort of thing that makes a neighborhood news operation - whether it's print or digital - matter most to the people who live here in this day and age.

It shouldn't be a punchline, like defunct phone booths (and telephone books). In today's world, where we're overwhelmed by negativity (and sometimes sheer lunacy) in our social media feeds, public celebrations of milestones - from birthdays to graduations to that new promotion at work - can be a wonderful antidote.
