New Traffic Signal Planned for Murray-Massenburg Elementary

Editor’s Note: This project was put up for re-bid on April 3, with a closing date of April 17.

In the next few months, expect work to begin on a new traffic signal for Murray-Massenburg Elementary School in the Hope Valley Farms area, at the intersection of Ramblewood Avenue and South Roxboro Street.

The City of Durham Department of Transportation is accepting bids for installation of that traffic signal, as well as upgrades to the intersection of South Roxboro Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

“The project is time sensitive with a goal of it being operational by Sept. 30, 2024,” according to the bid invitation by Robin Young, Durham transportation engineer. “The completion date is 120 calendar days after receiving notice to proceed.”

The city has completed soil tests and expects to provide metal poles and school flashers, while the chosen contractor will furnish other materials and equipment needed for the improvements.

Murray-Massenburg, the newest elementary school in the Durham Public Schools system, is under construction near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and South Roxboro Street. The project’s estimated cost is about $50 million. It’s slated to open this fall.
