[Office Hours] Data Centers Near You
If a data center were proposed near your home, when would you get a say? This week on Office Hours, I look at where neighbors would fit into Durham’s approval process.

If a developer proposed a data center near your home, when would you get a say? In this episode of Southpoint Access Office Hours, I recap Durham’s Nov. 4 joint city-county planning meeting. Leaders favored neighborhood meetings and public hearings, but they’re still weighing a possible 100,000-square-foot cap and whether smaller facilities serving hospitals and researchers should get a shorter review.
Two buildings of the same size can have very different demands for power and water. I explain how Central Pines Regional Council uses power demand to recommend how far data centers should sit from homes, and what neighbors can watch for when Durham planners bring draft options back to the committee in December. The next update is scheduled for Dec. 2.
