Durham Public Schools may be heading toward one of its most consequential debates in years: whether the district is simply trying to maintain too much.

On June 9, board members heard a presentation that framed “right-sizing” as a necessary part of DPS’ future, with district leaders pointing to underused space, aging buildings, long-term capital demands, and the need to better align the system’s footprint with enrollment and finances.

That conversation anchored a wide-ranging Board of Education work session that also reviewed the results of Durham County’s newly approved budget and revisited the district’s seclusion-and-restraint policy.
