Durham Public Schools employees won't have to wait until August for their 2026-27 raise after the Board of Education approved the district's salary schedules Tuesday night.

But they almost did have to wait, after three new board members - Gabrielle "Gabby" Rivero, Natalie Bent Kitaif, and Nadeen Bir - pushed to postpone approval to allow the board's finance committee to research options for providing even bigger raises, possibly in August.

That effort failed.

But Board Member Millicent Rogers proposed a compromise that called for approving the current salary schedules with the $18.22 minimum wage while the finance committee proceeds with its exploration for next month, with the option to retroactively pay school employees if more funding is found for higher pay.

Her motion passed 4-3.

The board also approved the design phase of a six-classroom mobile village to ease overcrowding at Lyons Farm Elementary School, as well as a $431,125 paving project at Southwest Elementary School.
