[SeeGov Enhanced] DPS seeks a plan for old Lowe’s Grove School after $18.5 million restoration estimate
What’s next for the old Lowe’s Grove School? An $18.5 million restoration estimate has DPS weighing its options, alongside updates on express bus stops, budget changes, and contract oversight.

Durham school board members pressed Thursday for a plan to address the deteriorating old Lowe’s Grove School after hearing that restoring it for housing could cost as much as $18.5 million.
The nearly 14-acre property at Alston Avenue and Jester Road, beside the South Regional Library, could support affordable housing, single-family homes, and a modest amount of retail, according to consultants from UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Government. But the building’s condition has made its immediate future a concern.
“I am for demolishing that building tomorrow,” Board Member Wendell Tabb said during the Oct. 8 work session.
The board didn’t approve demolition or choose a development plan. Members asked the Facilities Committee to bring back a recommendation on the building, with November as the target.
