Sensory-Friendly Films Return to Carolina Theatre

Sensory-Friendly Films Return to Carolina Theatre

Starting Aug. 24, South Durham families can enjoy sensor-friendly film experiences at downtown’s Carolina Theatre.

Tickets for the free screenings, a partnership with the Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development, can be reserved in advance. They run through December.

The Sensory Friendly Film Series includes guidance about maintaining a safe and welcoming experience for attendees, while staff members from Duke provide kits with fidget toys and headphones for patrons to use.

The Saturday showings all take place at 11:30 a.m. in Cinema One:

  • Aug. 24: Trolls.
  • Sept. 7: The Secret of NIMH.
  • Sept. 28: The Nutty Professor.
  • Oct. 26: Hocus Pocus.
  • Nov. 16: The Addams Family.
  • Nov. 23: The Sandlot.
  • Dec. 14: Elf.

During screenings, the theater isn’t entirely dark. Lights are dimmed, volume is lowered, and seating capacity is reduced to allow plenty of space for patrons to spread out or move around. There’s also a quiet space with calming activities for anyone overstimulated during the movie.
