Sheffield Farms Project Loses Bid at Planning Commission
The Durham Planning Commission on Tuesday voted 12-0 against a proposal to build the Sheffield Farms project off Farrington Mill Road.
The City Council will take that vote under advisement when it considers the proposal on March 18.
However, the board recommended 8-5 to move Leigh Valley to the City Council with a favorable recommendation.
As presented, Sheffield Farms would have converted 218.5 acres of rural residential land to a mix of 284 single-family homes, 90 townhouses, and 575 low-rise apartments – none of the properties designated as affordable housing.
Area residents during the public comment period spoke mostly against the project, citing increased traffic and environmental issues as their greatest concerns.
Leigh Valley, planned along George King Road, is a 28.57-acre project that would bring 340 townhouse, multiplex, or apartment units. About 10 of those would be designated affordable housing.
