Scammers are pretending to be officers with the Durham Police Department and calling residents, demanding that they pay a fine for missing a court appearance, bail a loved one out of jail, or to cover expenses for damaged property.
"Sometimes scams such as these will include spoofing a legitimate police agency phone number and using a real name of a law enforcement officer in an attempt to gain the trust of the victim," department officials said in a Facebook post. "No government agency of any kind takes payments via money transfer."
- Never give personal or financial information to an unsolicited caller or email.
- Be suspicious of callers who demand immediate payment for any reason.
- Stay private. Regularly update privacy settings for social media sites. Scammers often make their stories more believable by trolling for personal information.
- Never wire money or provide debit or credit card numbers to a stranger.
The police department stated that:
- It doesn't call individuals and demand or request money from residents under any circumstances.
- Legitimate law enforcement agencies don't call seeking payment for outstanding traffic citations or warrants, including claims of unpaid federal or state taxes.
Residents who fall prey to these scams and lose money are encouraged to file a report by calling the police department's non-emergency line at (919) 560-4600.
