Winter weather sweeping into the central North Carolina area overnight is expected to create conditions (particularly in northern sections of Durham County) that would hamper school transportation on Friday.

As a result, Durham Public Schools moved to remote-learning operations, shut down facilities for students and staff, and canceled athletic events and afterschool activities.

Teachers sent elementary students home with work packets, while middle and high school students should check Canvas for their remote assignments.

The National Weather Service reports that mixed precipitation is expected from midnight tonight through midnight on Friday, with snow accumulations as much as one inch (again, probably north of the Southpoint area) and a light glaze of ice that could create slippery road conditions.

Motorists are warned to slow down and use caution when traveling.
