Durham Public Schools are closed again on Tuesday, this time because of concerns about black ice and other hazardous road conditions while temperatures go below freezing until around noon.
The Office of Public Affairs told families on Monday evening that there'll be no school, all DPS facilities will be closed, and afterschool programs and athletic events are cancelled.
On Wednesday, assuming schools are back in session, they'll all be on an early release schedule.
The National Weather Service advisory at 5:57 p.m. on Monday indicated that temperatures are expected to fall rapidly tonight, falling into the teens and lower 20s.
"Be prepared for slippery roads," the advisory states. "Slow down and use caution while driving. If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury."
