[SoDu How-To] Get Rid of That Live Christmas Tree
The city waste disposal center and six parks will accept live trees in January.

When Christmas is over, the City of Durham offers a few ways to get rid of live trees starting in January.

All live trees left at free drop-off locations – or picked up via limited curbside service – must meet the following criteria:

  • Cut in half if taller than six feet.
  • All decorations and hardware removed, including tinsel, lights, garland, ornaments, nails, and stands.
  • No bags.

Free curbside collections are available only for current yard waste and exempt service customers. Tree collection won’t count toward a free brush collection for yard waste customers.

Curbside live tree collections will run from Jan. 2 through Feb. 3. Customers should place their tree at the curb on their normal collection day – no service request required.

Drop-off locations include:

  • The waste disposal and recycling center at 2115 E. Club Blvd. Jan. 2 through Feb. 1. 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. 7:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
  • Six city parks: C.M. Herndon Park at 511 Scott King Rd., Valley Springs Park at 3805 Valley Springs Rd., Rock Quarry Park at 701 Stadium Dr., Southern Boundaries Park at 3400 Third Fork Rd., Bethesda Park at 1814 Stage Rd., and Campus Hills (parking lot) at 2000 S. Alston Ave. Pickup dates at the parks are Jan. 4, Jan. 11, Jan. 18, and Jan. 25, from 7 a.m. to noon.
