School handbooks tend to arrive at exactly the wrong moment.

Families are already sorting through supply lists, open houses, transportation arrangements, sports schedules, after-school care, and the uneasy realization that someone outgrew every acceptable pair of shoes during the summer.

Then comes a 43-page handbook filled with policies, forms, fees, warnings, phone numbers, and links.

Southpoint Access is breaking down the Durham Public Schools 2026-27 Student/Family Handbook into manageable pieces. This first installment focuses on the business families should handle before, or soon after, the first day of school.

Year-round students return July 20. Traditional-calendar students return Aug. 24.
