Durham voters can cast their ballots early starting Oct. 16 ahead of the Nov. 4, 2025, municipal election for Mayor and City Council.

Durham’s municipal general election is Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025, and voters will decide who leads the city as Mayor and who represents City Council Wards 1, 2, and 3.

Whether you’re new to Durham, attending college here, or just haven’t voted in a while, this guide will walk you through everything you need to register, update your info, and cast your ballot - early or on Election Day.

✅ Who Should Register (or Re-Register)

You’ll need to register or update your voter record if you:

  • Are new to Durham County
  • Have moved, changed your name, or switched party affiliation
  • Are a college student registering with a campus address
  • Received a Registration Repair letter from the NC State Board of Elections

📝 How to Register to Vote

What You’ll Need:

  • Full legal name
  • Durham residential address (not a P.O. box)
  • Mailing address (if different)
  • Date of birth
  • Citizenship status
  • A wet-ink signature (handwritten, not digital)
  • Either:
    • NC driver’s license number
    • Last 4 digits of your SSN
    • Or a statement that you have neither

Where to Register:

  • By mail:
    Durham County Board of Elections
    P.O. Box 868, Durham, NC 27702
  • In person:
    3825 S. Roxboro St., Ste. 101, Durham, NC 27713
  • Online (if you have a DMV ID):
    NC DMV Voter Registration Portal

🛑 Deadline: Friday, Oct. 10 at 5 p.m.

Missed the deadline? No problem. You can register and vote on the same day at any Early Voting site (Oct. 16–Nov. 1).

Just bring:

  • A photo ID
  • Proof of your Durham address (utility bill, lease, bank statement, student doc, etc.)

Note: You can’t register on Election Day (Nov. 4) — that’s early voting only.

🎓 How Students Can Register to Vote from Campus

If you’re a student at Duke or NCCU living on campus, you’ll need to list both your residence hall address and mailing address accurately.

  • Mailing Address: Duke Campus Box [box #], Durham, NC 27708

🗳️ How Early Voting Works (Oct. 16–Nov. 1)

Early Voting is open to all Durham County voters and provides flexibility plus the ability to register and vote at the same time.

What You Can Do During Early Voting:

  • Vote in person
  • Update your Durham address or party info

What You’ll Need:

  • Photo ID (required for all voters in NC)

🛠️ Registration Repair: What to Do if You Got a Letter

The State Board of Elections is contacting ~82,000 voters whose registrations are missing ID numbers (SSN or DMV ID). If you're on this list, your vote may be delayed unless you act.

How to Fix It:

  • Online: payments.ncdot.gov
  • 🏢 In person: Visit the Durham County Board of Elections
  • 📬 By mail: Return the form that came with your letter (no postage required)
