[SoDu Sunrise Showcase] Duke and UNC Coming Together for the Kids

Help me keep our South Durham neighbors informed! Write for Southpoint Access! Plus, DPS offers migrant family assurances, and the Planning Commission hears three SoDu proposals next month.

[SoDu Sunrise Showcase] Duke and UNC Coming Together for the Kids

Hey. You. Do you live in South Durham? Can you gather information? Can you put it into words to share with neighbors?

Well, thanks to the generous funding from LION Publishers, I've got a budget for a few freelance writers. What I'm looking for:

  • High-priority: Data/clerical assistance. It takes several hours each week for me to put together obituaries, birth reports, marriage applications, and other data-heavy items. You earn: $75 per article published.
  • Medium-priority: Features about evergreen topics. What do you want to know about South Durham? Are you willing to go digging to find out more about it and then write 800-1,000 words? Pitch me some ideas (or reach out and ask what's on my to-do list) at southpointaccessnews@gmail.com. You earn: $250 per article published.
  • Lower-priority (but not zero!): Durham live government meeting or daily features (library events, school activities, etc.) coverage. Generally, no more than 500 words. You earn: $75 per article published.

Southpoint Access also welcomes guest columns from subject matter experts on topics relevant our neighbors here in SoDu. Touch base with me at southpointaccessnews@gmail.com.

What else is going on?

Duke and UNC: Partners in Health

Huge news this week as Duke University Health and UNC Health made it official that they're joining forces to build the first freestanding children's hospital in the Carolinas - somewhere in the Triangle. I wondered if it might come to South Durham, but we don't have many available 100-acre tracts around here (unless someone decides to tear down Streets at Southpoint to build the hospital complex). Smarter money puts the complex closer to Morrisville in easy reach of RDU and Interstate 40.

Where do you think it'll go?

Durham Schools Reassure Against ICE Fears: On Tuesday, Durham Public Schools issued a statement reassuring students, staff, and families that the district is “committed to fostering an inclusive, welcoming, and supportive environment for every student and family that we serve.”

South Durham Projects Headed to Planning Commission: The projects up for discussion on Feb. 11 include 1202 Ellis Rd., Methodist Street Townhouses, and Strauss Drive Townhouses.
