Gas prices appear to be falling at some South Durham stations, suggesting North Carolina’s temporary gas-tax suspension may be starting to bring savings to local drivers.

Southpoint Access’s price checks from Oct. 11 to Oct. 13 found declines at seven of 16 stations tracked. Five recorded drops of 41 cents per gallon, matching the suspended state tax. The observations suggest the savings may be reaching some pumps, though they don’t establish how much of the change resulted from the suspension.

The local declines come as Attorney General Jeff Jackson launched N.C. Fuel Check on Oct. 13, giving drivers a way to report stations they suspect aren’t passing along tax savings. Jackson also sent letters to fuel retailers and distributors saying the law requires them to pass those savings to customers.

“My job is to make sure the savings reach the families,” Jackson said in the announcement.

Gov. Josh Stein signed the tax suspension Oct. 9. It runs from Oct. 10 through Nov. 30 and covers gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuels, according to the N.C. Department of Revenue.
