South Durham Hotel Could Become Multi-Family Homes
An existing 128-room hotel site near the Harris Teeter in the South Square area at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and University Drive is proposed to become multifamily units, about 25 of them qualifying as affordable housing.
Tonight, developer Urbanest Group is set to host a second virtual neighborhood meeting from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. via Microsoft Teams.
Currently, the site at 1920 Ivy Creek Blvd. is zoned for office and institutional development, but Urbanest representative Tarak Shaer would like to see that change to planned development residential.
According to submitted documents, the Vivo Living project’s 128 units would include 20% designated as affordable housing for families earning no more than 60% AMI (area median income). They would be deed-restricted for 30 years. The developer also proposes a one-time contribution of $10,000 to Durham Public Schools and another $10,000 to the Durham Dedicated Housing Fund.
They also would, if needed, add a bus pull-out and concrete pad/bus shelter to GoDurham/GoTriangle specifications along the east side of University Drive or the south side of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway.
