Southpoint Area School Facility Inspection Grades [December 2023]

On occasion, Southpoint Access will gather information from Durham County’s Public Health Department to get a snapshot of how facilities in this region are scoring on their inspections. In this report, we delve into recent reports for school buildings and cafeterias.

Bethesda School Lunchroom. 2009 S. Miami Blvd. Score: 91/100. Notes: Food stored in walk-in cooler that was known not to be holding temperature. Two employee beverages on prep tables. Staff member touched handle of handsink with bare hands after completing washing. Foods such as American cheese and queso blanco kept above 41 degrees Fahrenheit.

Bethesda Christian Academy. 1914 S. Miami Blvd. Score: 93.5/100. Notes: Water-damaged ceiling tiles in classrooms and storage areas. Media center carpet needs cleaning. Damaged floor tiles in classroom.

Burton School Lunchroom. 1500 Mathison St. Score: 99.5/100. Notes: Pan of tightly sealed cole slaw in three-door reach cooler. Paint peeling off walls above the three-compartment sink.

Camelot Academy. 809 Proctor St. Score: 96.5/100. Notes: Peeling paint on walls, doorways, and baseboards. Visible cracks in wall by Avalon hallway vent. Cracked floor tiles in upstairs bathrooms. Popcorn ceiling in science lab cracked and chipping.

Cressett Christian Academy. 3707 Garrett Rd. Score: 100/100. Notes: No notes.

Discovery Charter School. 501 Orange Factory Rd. Score: 99/100. Notes: Storage on floor of closet in 500 hall and in janitor’s closet in the gym.

Durham School of the Arts. 400 N. Duke St. Score: 97.5/100. Notes: In right hot box, chicken calzones were held between 130-132 degrees Fahrenheit. Should be at least 135 degrees. Chipping paint on shelving units and legs.

Forest View Elementary School. 3007 Mt. Sinai Rd. Score: 97/100. Notes: Missing and damaged ceiling tiles above chair storage in gym. Hole in wall of classroom 1105.

Forest View Lunchroom. 3007 Mt. Sinai Rd. Score: 99.5/100. Notes: Crate used to store one box of mayonnaise and two boxes of barbecue sauce.

Hillside High School. 3727 Fayetteville St. Score: 86.5/100. Notes: Water fountain outside boy’s restroom in theater hall badly damaged and not working. Most bathrooms have holes in walls. Some have water-damaged or missing ceiling tiles. The 200-hall women’s restroom is missing two toilet seats. Handwashing sinks don’t stay on when pressed.

Hillside Lunchroom. 3727 Fayetteville St. Score: 99/100. Notes: Salads cooling from prep in closed clam shell containers in the walk-in cooler. Three facility thermometers read below 32 degrees Fahrenheit in ice bath. Washed pears bagged and on display in front line with sticker still intact.

Hillside New Tech. 3727 Fayetteville St. Score: 90/100. Notes: Holes in restroom walls. Out-of-order toilet in upstairs women’s restroom and another in the annex men’s restroom. Malfunctioning sinks in restrooms. Leaks in ceilings in offices, restroom, closet, and classroom.

Hope Creek Academy. 4723 Erwin Rd. Score: 97/100. Notes: Holes in the wall in Room 12.

Lowes Grove Middle School Lunchroom. 4418 Alston Ave. Score: 97/100. Notes: Milk and cheese sticks in the walk-in cooler holding at 45 to 47 degrees Fahrenheit. Wet wiping clothes in buckets with excessive sanitizer chemical concentrations.

Lyons Farm Elementary School Lunchroom. 906 Scott King Rd. Score: 98.5/100. Notes: Food employees turned off faucets with bare hands after washing. Opened American cheese in walk-in cooler lacked date label. Boxes of food stored on milk crate in walk-in freezer. Broken handsink behind front serving line.

Maureen Joy Charter School. 107 S. Driver St. Score: 98.5/100. Notes: Stained ceiling tile in custodial closet. Peeling paint on top ledge of nursing station.

Merrick Moore Elementary School. 2325 Cheek Rd. Score: 91.5/100. Notes: Three sinks in girls’ bathroom in fifth grade hall with extremely low water pressure. Water damage on ceiling tiles throughout the building. Clothes on auditorium floor. Storage on floor of custodial closet near music room. Damaged blinds in fifth grade hall. Window sill in modular unit deteriorating from carpenter ants.

Merrick Moore School Lunchroom. 2325 Cheek Rd. Score: 99/100. Notes: Scoops stored as clean had food debris on them.

Morehead Lunchroom. 909 W. Cobb St. Score: 99.5/100. Notes: Yams were cooked and placed on counter to cool with plastic wrap tightly covering the dish. Dishwasher broken and hasn’t functioned since February.

Northern High School Cafeteria. 4622 N. Roxboro St. Score: 96.5/100. Notes: Two employee beverages improperly stored on prep surfaces. Paper towels missing at kitchen and front line hand sinks. Five pans of mashed potatoes in hot holding cabinet kept between 123-126 degrees Fahrenheit, but should be at least 135 degrees. One pan of hamburger patties sitting on prep table at 55 degrees. Cleaning tabs in containers stored above paper towels in janitorial closet.
