Chris and Marie Curran have found a home in Durham, and since early 2023, they’ve also found the perfect outlet for their passion: AR Workshop.

Originally from Ohio and Pennsylvania, the Currans came to North Carolina for Chris’s graduate studies at East Carolina University, and soon fell in love with AR Workshop as customers.

When they learned that the Durham franchise was available, they jumped at the opportunity to shape the DIY studio at 2816 Erwin Rd. for their new community.

“We were customers first and loved the experience,” Marie said. “We wanted to connect more deeply with Durham and saw this as the perfect fit.”

A DIY Experience Tailored to Everyone

AR Workshop Durham offers a wide array of hands-on projects, from wood and canvas crafts to candle pouring and blanket making—perfect for the upcoming cozy season. Customers can personalize each project, whether it’s a Halloween decoration or a custom-made candle, with expert instructors guiding them every step of the way.

What sets AR Workshop apart is its individualized approach, allowing customers to express their own style without needing prior experience. “Our instructors walk guests through the process, ensuring everyone leaves with something they’re proud of,” Marie said.

The workshop also hosts events, including birthdays, corporate team-building sessions, and bachelorette parties. The Currans pride themselves on handling everything from supplies to cleanup, creating a stress-free, enjoyable environment for all.

AR Workshop’s Nationwide Success

AR Workshop started in 2016, the brainchild of Maureen Anders and Adria Ruff, who initially launched Anders Ruff, a design company that featured a DIY blog and online shop. Their loyal following soon clamored for in-person workshops, leading to the first AR Workshop location. Since then, the franchise has grown to more than 150 locations across the country, becoming a popular space for DIY enthusiasts.

The Currans are thrilled to be part of this growing movement, bringing hands-on creativity to Durham in a tech-driven world.

“There’s no substitute for in-person crafting,” Marie said. “We’re excited to continue offering these experiences to the community.”
